Increase of export opportunities for fair carpets
A small family business makes hand-woven carpets of residues of alpaca wool. The carpets are popular on local, but also international markets. Because of the limited production and the lack of management skills, the products are sold incidentally. By means of knowledge transfer to and co-operation with others the company is able to extend the production capacity and increase the sales. The family business and the NGO CID-Arequipa asked for advice with formulating a company strategy based on optimising the sale of the carpets.
The new vision on the business by the SharePeople participants led to several 'eye-openers'. The family business received recommendations concerning the complete company management varying from their management for purchase, planning and financial management to the (im)possibilities of export to for example Europe. With that the local parties have become more aware on a strategic level of their place in the value chain. CID-Arequipa received suggestions for setting up ‘shared non-competitive services' for such SMEs.
